Authority over Jewish Law Homework

In addition to having read and commented on the Rosh HaShana 2:8-9 mishna story, please read the text from Bava Metzia 59a-59b. On the handout I copied for you, the text I want you to read is bracketed off with my markings. Remember, as you read, do not get caught up in the details of the beginning of the story. The Rabbis are arguing about whether or not a particular kind of oven is kosher. That doesn't matter. The argument, miracles, and bat kol/voice from God that come a little bit into the story are the essence of what I want you to read.

After you read the story (and while thinking about the Rosh HaShana text as well, please respond to the following questions:
1) With whom does the authority and control over Jewish law rest?
2) Do you believe that the Rabbis (except Rabbi Eliezer) were disrespectful in any way? Do you think they were right or wrong?
3) What does the conclusion of this text mean for the future generations of the Jewish people?

Please WRITE UP your answer (I prefer you to type it) and bring it in to class for next THURSDAY 11/6. We will be doing other material in class until then.
Good luck!
